Entrepreneurship isn’t just about ideas. It’s about hard work and discipline towards a business and its goals with precision and focus. However, to achieve success and thrive in today’s world, entrepreneurs must coincide hard work with productivity.
Being productive means being efficient and utilizing the time, energy, and resources given to you. Productivity is not just about doing as much as possible, but instead deliberately orchestrating tasks and activities to attain the desired result.
As an entrepreneur, are you being productive or just being active? Most do not know the difference and get stuck in a trap of feeling productive, but are really just doing busywork that is not getting them results. Be realistic with yourself. Be accountable for laziness or slacking during your work.
Time Management
Time is your most valuable resource. Being able to manage your time effectively can be the difference between stagnation and growth, between success and failure. As an entrepreneur, your time is almost always in demand. You may have to analyze statistics, attend meetings, or market your business.
There are a multitude of things that call for your attention and can easily leave you overwhelmed and stressed. This can lead to poor performance and anxiety, not to mention no free time to pursue other things.
It can be something as simple as waking up earlier to give yourself more time in the day or saying no to unnecessary and distracting activities. You don’t want to be a slave to the clock. Incorporating time-management techniques into your everyday life can help you master your schedule and become your most productive self.
Try various time management techniques and see what works for you. Some like to try the Pomodoro Technique, which is a method based on 25-minute intervals of productive work followed by 5-minute breaks.
Remove Distractions
Distractions are productivity’s greatest adversary. Everyone gets distracted by other things that demand your attention, and divert you to something that doesn’t help you or your work. It’s inevitable. For entrepreneurs that wish to make the most of their time and energy, removing distractions is an important step.
Creating an environment that limits distractions is the key to productivity. Set up a workspace where you are motivated and focus on your work. This can mean lowering the noise or simply keeping the environment clean.
Unless you are a lucky individual who hasn’t fallen victim to phones and its multitude of cravings, then you are probably distracted constantly by your phone.
Prevent your phone from triggering cues that would cause you to pick it up and avert your attention to it. Silence notifications, set screen time limits (especially for social media), and keep your distance from it. It’s easy to fall down a rabbit hole of social media or other distracting apps that can eat up at your time.
Create A To-Do List
An entrepreneur without structure is bound to be scattered and unproductive. Creating a to-do list is an effective way to boost productivity and create a sense of clarity. Think of it as making a roadmap for your day. A to-do list can keep your organized and focused on your various tasks. Whether it is physical or digital, a to-do list can be extremely beneficial.
Personally, I use an app called Todoist. It is an app that I have been using for over a year and has helped me keep track of my everyday activities and boost my productivity. An additional tip I have is to create your to-do list at night. This is because it creates mental clarity before sleep and prevents your lazy morning-self from cheating yourself. Whatever platform or method you use to make your to-do list, make sure it is a format that works for you.
Take Necessary Breaks
Work smarter, not harder. Contrary to popular belief, breaks are not a productivity-killer. It may sound counterintuitive, but taking breaks can actually boost your productivity. Incorporating breaks into your routine can give you a mental recharge and help to maintain focus.
It is a chance to take a step back and return with renewed energy and creativity. It is also a way to prevent burnout. Sometimes you are overwhelmed by work and need a much-needed break. Remember that when this happens, that it is ok to take a pause and then return to work.
Prioritization/Focus
Proper prioritization is crucial for any entrepreneur. It is allocating your time and resources where they matter most. Prioritization acts as a sort of compass, and discerns between the urgent and the important, and making deliberate choices that align with your focus and goals.
It allows us to streamline our efforts and avoid focusing on meaningless matters. In a world of ceaseless demands, prioritization is a great way to maintain productivity.
Side note: Avoid multitasking. Please. Although it may seem productive and efficient, it can actually hinder your performance and focus. We are not meant to mindlessly switch from task to task. Instead we must focus our attention on one thing at a time.
Automate
Just because you are an entrepreneur does not mean that every little task has to be done by you. With the multitude of emerging technologies that help automate everyday life, it would be stupid to not utilize them. Automating tasks is something that allows us to reclaim our time and energy.
Identify and act on opportunities to automate and delegate the repetitive tasks that take up a lot of your time. Employ artificial intelligence or systems and processing applications to take the load off yourself and your employees. Of course, when automating tasks it is ok to add your personal touch. The extra time you receive by not being burdened by meaningless tasks can be used towards more important endeavors.
Now that you know of numerous ways to become a more productive entrepreneur, try implementing these tips into your everyday routine and business. Remember that productivity isn’t a one-fits-all concept, but is instead personalized to each individual and calls for different techniques. Experiment. Try different things and see what works for you.
