There are numerous factors of a successful business. However, the most important of these is the actual entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are the individuals who leads the business to success.
Entrepreneurs with the right entrepreneurial mindset and traits are bound for success. Based on the business, this will often differ from person to person. However, there are some characteristics that are universal among all successful entrepreneurs that aspiring entrepreneurs should aim to imitate.
What is an entrepreneur?
An entrepreneur is an individual that creates a business startup and operates it. They bring new ideas to life and introduce them to the market. They find and solve a problem or pursue something that they are passionate about. Entrepreneurs are visionaries that live and breath business. Harvard Business School relates entrepreneurship to a “process of discovery.”
Here are 7 characteristics and traits of successful entrepreneurs:
- Problem-solving
- Discipline
- Content with failure
- Curiosity
- Innovative
- Risk-takers
- Adaptability
1. They are problem-solvers
The primary concept of entrepreneurship is solving a problem. Entrepreneurs are problem-solvers that identify a challenge that many people face, and aim to alleviate the situation.
Once the solution is realized, it is planned out and then put out on the market. Often, problems will be prevalent at any stage of business, so entrepreneurs must be prepared for any challenge that may come their way.
A successful entrepreneur strives on identifying roadblocks as opportunities in disguise. They possess an ability to analyze issues and devise solutions. This tenacity forms the foundation of successful business ventures.
2. They have discipline
Discipline is a characteristic of entrepreneurs that allow them to stay consistent and focused on their business.
Discipline is working even when you don’t feel like it. It is going the extra mile even when it doesn’t feel necessary. Discipline is avoiding procrastination and working on the task at hand. This displays a sense of dedication to the business.
Entrepreneurs should build habits that make tedious work easier and more automatic.
3. They are content with failure
Failure is bound to appear and interfere with success. Learning to embrace failure and learn from it is crucial. It’s important how you react, and then adapt to shortcomings.
Welcome failure as an opportunity to learn something new. Don’t be afraid of failure. If something goes wrong, determine why and how you can improve in the future.
Being content with failure showcases humility and a willingness to learn from one’s mistakes. Successful entrepreneurs understand that not everything will go according to plan, and that failure is something that can occur even when the right steps are taken.
4. They are curious
Curiosity is something that is almost unique to entrepreneurs and is what sets them apart. Entrepreneurs are always looking for new learning opportunities and new methods of achieving success. They continuously seek out new opportunities and act on them.
Successful entrepreneurs understand that they are not perfect, and don’t know everything. Thus, they constantly ask questions. They challenge the societal norm and yearn to discover new things. Curiosity acts as an insatiable hunger that requires exploration. It demands that we ask questions such as “why” or “how” to understand the world.
5. They are innovative
Innovation is the cornerstone of entrepreneurship. It’s when something is renewed and brought up to date by applying new processes and techniques.
There is a large plethora of businesses out there. Chances are that in your industry you are not alone in your idea or in your product. Innovation is what sets you apart, as utilizing new ideas and performing different practices sets you apart from the competition.
Successful entrepreneurs thrive on developing new ideas, as well as improving on existing processes. If you think about, innovation is what sparks the creation of a business.
6. They take risks
There is almost no successful business that has been prosperous from staying entirely cautious and passive. At some point, those businesses took the leap and took risks to reach their goals.
Risks and entrepreneurship go hand-in-hand. When someone launches a business venture, they must undertake financial risks and act accordingly.
I’m not saying to go in guns-blazing, but I’m also not saying to go in completely passive. Have a risk tolerance, or the level of risk that you are willing to take. Take calculated risks and be armed with knowledge and prepared to learn from any outcome. These risks are driven by one’s belief in their business and the idea that growth can be achieved from them.
7. They have adaptability
The market is volatile. Your life is volatile. The world is volatile. Things are bound to change. Being able to adapt to change and recuperate you and your business is a characteristic of a successful entrepreneur.
In an ever-evolving world, you must be able to assess the current situation, and determine the next steps based on the given context. Adaptability is not merely a response to external circumstances, but a mindset that welcomes innovation.
